The National “Stop Dengue Now” programme launched
The National "Stop Dengue Now" programme was officially launched to strengthen dengue prevention and control efforts in Sri Lanka. The initiative is implemented by the Ministry of Health and Mass Media together with private sector and media partners to support the national response to the ongoing dengue outbreak.
The programme will initially focus on high-risk areas in the Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara districts, where intensified vector control, community engagement, and public awareness activities will be carried out over the coming weeks.
The initiative brings together the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), News 1st as the official media partner, MAS Holdings, and other supporting organizations in a coordinated effort to mobilize communities for sustainable dengue prevention.
Current epidemiological surveillance indicates that the Western Province accounts for more than half of the reported dengue cases in the country. Accordingly, 23 high-risk Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas and local authority jurisdictions within Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, and the Colombo Municipal Council have been prioritized for intensified interventions.
The programme emphasizes community participation in eliminating mosquito breeding sites through proper environmental management and source reduction. Public awareness activities, inspections, and community mobilization programmes will be conducted with the participation of Public Health Inspectors, Grama Niladharis, Development Officers, local authorities, and other government stakeholders.
The National Dengue Control Unit encourages all communities, institutions, government agencies, private sector organizations, and media partners to work together in sustaining dengue prevention activities throughout the year. Community ownership and continued public participation remain the cornerstone of effective dengue control.
