Colombo District Entomology Review 2026: Strengthening Vector Surveillance and Targeted Interventions

As the Western Province accounts for over 50% of the national dengue burden, strengthening proactive vector surveillance and streamlining synchronized data sharing across all Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas/ district level/national level remains vital for outbreak forecasting and targeted intervention deployment. In alignment with this mandate, the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) successfully convened the Colombo District Entomology Review on the 10th of September 2026 at the NDCU Auditorium.

Headed by the Director of the NDCU, Consultant Community Physicians from the NDCU, and NDCU Entomologists, the meeting brought together key public health figures including the CCP and Medical Officer for the Western Province, the Regional Epidemiologist and Entomologist for RDHS Colombo, all Medical Officers of Health from the Colombo RDHS area, and all Health Entomology Officers attached to Colombo MOH offices. The primary objective of this comprehensive review was to evaluate MOH-level vector surveillance data, including larval and adult survey results collected throughout 2026 while identifying high-risk transmission clusters and operational bottlenecks to formulate synchronized district action plans.

The meeting featured detailed 15–20-minute presentations by respective HEOs, who presented their MOH entomology data and localized surveillance findings; these findings are critically important for driving our ground-level vector control activities.
